Anemone x hybrid Andria Atkinson (Family: Ranunculaceae), sparkling white flowers surround frilly yellow stamens with chartreuse centers. The darker foliage, maple-shaped leaves of Anemone Andrea Atkinson gives a nice contrast to this long blooming variety.

Anemone commonly called windflower or Japanese anemone, is a hybrid category which includes a large number of hybrid pink or white flowered cultivars that bloom from late summer into fall (August – October). These cultivars vary somewhat in character but generally are erect, clump-forming, woody-based perennials which typically grow to 2-3′ (infrequently to 4′) tall on stems clad with oval palmate toothed leaves.

Genus name often said to be derived from the Greek anemos meaning wind.

Anemone are outstanding plants for the late summer and fall garden. The branching stems of poppy-like flowers are superb for cutting. Plants prefer a rich, moist site, spreading to form a large patch. The flowers are held high above the foliage and have a nodding habit. Use a winter mulch in colder regions, particularly if planting in the fall. Easily divided in early spring.

These plants thrive best in shady areas and under protection of larger plants, and in all but the hottest and the driest conditions in the United States. They are especially sensitive to drought or overwatering.

White Anemones, Pink September Charm are the one of all time favorites from this group of garden beauties.

The whole group of Japanese Anemones, while not all are from Japan, make up a magnificent, underused group of perennials for late summer and fall bloom. These plants begin their big show when everything else is going by. And what a show it is!

They form handsome plants up to 2 or 3 feet, and then put up elegant ball-shaped buds on slender stems. Then the flowers open in vivid jewel-tone colors, up to 4 across. These flowers add absolutely stunning color in late summer. Like a rose, each flower comes on its own elegant thin long stem. You’ll love any arrangement with these beauties. Or if you leave them in the garden, they’ll keep it bright right up until frost.

How to care

Best grown in organically rich, evenly moist, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Soils must not be allowed to dry out. Plants are best sited in part shade locations with protection from wind. Foliage tends to burn in hot, dry, sunny summer conditions. Plants do not perform well in the deep South (south of USDA Zone 7). Avoid wet, poorly drained soils, particularly in winter. Plants appreciate a winter mulch in cold winter climates. Plants may be slow to establish, but will naturalize well by spreading rhizomes in optimum growing conditions.

Pruning: Cut back in late autumn

Problems: No serious insect or disease problems. Watch for leaf spot, powdery mildew, downy mildew, rust and leaf/stem smut. Caterpillars, slugs and nematodes may be troublesome. Black blister beetles and Japanese beetles can defoliate plant foliage in some areas. Taller plants may need some staking or other support.

Suggested planting locations and garden types:

Excellent fall bloomer. Perennial borders, cottage gardens, woodland gardens. Effective when massed. Attractive with hostas and astilbes.
